With Halloween approaching in two weeks, Hollywood hopes to attract audiences looking for a fun fright. Sony unveils the horror fantasy Goosebumps [GBUMP] based on the bestselling book series by R.L. Stine. Jack Black [JBLAC] stars as the fictionalized version of the author whose monstrous creations have sprung to life from the pages of his book. The PG-rating keeps the film family friendly for the target audience. Opening in 2501 theaters, Goosebumps could raise $27 million.
The Martian [MARTN] should continue to orbit steadily in its third outing. A descent around 40% would still net $23 million.
Diector Steven Spielberg [SSPIE] and Tom Hanks [THANK] team up for the fourth time in the historical thriller Bridge of Spies [CLDWR] about the 1960 U-2 spy plane incident. The PG-13 rated film from DreamWorks-Disney has earned rave reviews, but will appeal only to older adults. Bridge of Spies could check in $17 million from 2811 locations.
In contrast to Goosebumps, Universal offers the R-rated horror Crimson Peak [SRMSP]. The gothic period setting should appeal to women and fans of director Guillermo Del Toro [GDELT], but may have trouble crossing over to a braoder audience. Spilling into 2983 theaters, Crimson Peak may capture $16 million.
Despite the appearance of a sports drama, Woodlawn [WDLWN] is unlikely to break out of the Christian fanbase specialized by Pure Flix. Lining up in 1500 theaters, Woodlawn could rush for $4 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
