A trio of new films open in wide release, but the top spot will be a close race between sophomore pics Spectre [JB24] and The Peanuts Movie [PENUT]. The family-friendly Charlie Brown and gang should be able to hold 70% of its debut, which could put The Peanuts Movie in first with $30 million. With word of mouth mixed, Spectre may decline more like Quantum of Solace’s second weekend drop of 60%, than Skyfall’s 54%. Spectre would have to settle for a close second at $29 million.
Antonio Banderas [ABAND] leads The 33 [THE33] based on the true story of the Chilean miners. Warner Bros. is targeting Hispanic moviegoers and the inspirational drama should connect with that audience. Opening in 2452 theaters, The 33 could dig up $9 million.
Every holiday season, Hollywood gives us a family comedy about Christmas. This year, Lionsgate and CBCS Films unwrap the PG-13 rated Love the Coopers [TMWTM]. The cast led by Diane Keaton [DKEAT] and John Goodman [JGOOD] don’t particularly have any box office clout. Showing at 2603 locations, Love the Coopers may gather up $8 million.
Clarius releases the inspirational sports drama My All American [MALAM] just one month after Woodlawn opened to $4.0 million by targeting the Christian market. Without a similar built-in audience, My All American may gain $3 million from 1565 theaters.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
