Hyper-jumping ahead of the previous opening weekend box office of all times, Star Wars: The Force Awakens [STAR7] ignited an estimated $238.0 million to blast away Jurassic World's $208.8 million. The intergalactic sequel earned a record $57 million in Thursday evening previews towards a record total of $120.5 million on opening day Friday, eclipsing both marks held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. 2D made up 51% of the gross. The audience was 58% male and 63% over the age of 25. With excellent word of mouth and Christmas already the third biggest day of presales, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be strong through the holiday season.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip [ALVN4] debuted in second place at $14.4 million, the lowest in the franchise. Females made up 63% of the audience.
Sisters [TNEST] opened with $13.4 million for the third spot. Predictably the comedy skewed 76% female and 71% over the age of 25.
Diving to number eight, In the Heart of the Sea [HRTSE] sunk 69% in its second weekend to $3.5 million.
The Bollywood film Dilwale [DILWA] charted ninth overall with nearly $2.0 million from 268 theaters.
