After smashing several box office records in 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens [STAR7] began 2016 by setting the best third weekend with an estimated $88.3 million with a New Year's Day high of $34.5 million. The space saga pushed its total to $740.3 million, behind only Avatar's $760.5 million on the all-time domestic box office list.
Daddy's Home [DHOME] remained in second place with $29.0 million. The family comedy declined 25% in its sophomore weekend to bring its to $93.7 million.
Expanding to wide release after one week of 70MM roadshow, The Hateful Eight [HATE8] moved up to third at $16.2 million. The western has earned $29.6 million.
Sisters [TNEST] finished third with $12.5 million to up its total to $69.5 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip [ALVN4] took fourth with $11.8 million and $67.4 million overall.
Joy [JOY] brought in $10.4 million for the fifth spot. The biopic dropped 39% in its second weekend.
The Big Short [BIGSH] slipped just 15% from its wide debut to $9.0 million. The financial drama has banked $33.0 million.
Concussion [GAMEB] came in seventh at $8.0 million, off 27% from its opening, while Point Break [PTBR2] fell 33% to $6.8 million.
