The second film in the Stephenie Meyer romance series, Twilight Saga: New Moon [TWLI2] opened with an estimated $140.7 million, more than doubled Twilight's $69.6 million. The opening is the third highest ever behind The Dark Knight's $158.4 million and Spider-Man 3 $151.1 million. New Moon set the record for biggest opening day ever at $72.7 million, and the new midnight sales record at $26.3 million. Women made up 80% of the audience.
Warner Bros.' The Blind Side [BLDSD] debuted in second place with a better than expected $34.5 million. The opening is a career best for Sandra Bullock [SBULL], who helped attract an audience that was 59% female to the sports drama.
Last weekend's top film, 2012 [2012S] tumbled 59% in its second weekend to $26.5 million. The Sony disaster film has grossed $108 million.
The animated Planet 51 [PLT51] landed in fourth place with $12.6 million. The Sony release appealed mainly to families with young children.
