Warner Bros.' team-up of DC Comics superheroes is fading fast, but may have enough in the tank for a threpeat at the weekend box office. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice could drop more than 50% to $25 million.
The reigning queen of R-rated comedy Melissa McCarthy [MMCCA] is back as The Boss [MDARN]. Her last film Spy debuted in June with $29.0 million. However, The Boss has received poor reviews more along the lines of Tammy, which opened with $21.6 million in July of 2014. Playing in 3481 theaters, The Boss could net $22 million.
Hardcore Harry [HRDCR] is marketed as the first film shot and presented entirely from the first-person point-of-view. STX acquired the innovative film last year at the Toronto Film Festival. With a lack of stars, the R-rated actioner will appeal primarily to young males weaned on videogames. Showing in 3015 theaters, Hardcore Harry could blast away $9 million.
Jake Gyllenhaal [JGYLL] toplines the R-rated drama Demolition [DMOLT], which also premiered at Toronto. The film received mixed reviews, otherwise Fox Searchlight would have released it at the end of last year. Slotted into 854 theaters, Demolition could knock down $2.5 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
