With another lull before the coming superhero storm next weekend, The Jungle Book [JNGLB] should easily prevail for a third time with around $38 million.
Keanu [KEANU] stars sketch comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key [KMKEY] and Jordan Peele [JPEEL] in their first film together. Warner Bros. hopes their TV success translates to the big screen and brings out the young male moviegoers. The humor in the R-rated action comedy has really come across in the marketing and reviews have been trending positive. Pouncing in 2658 theaters, Keanu may reave $14 million.
Mother’s Day [MTHRS] comes a week early as Open Road releases the latest ensemble comedy from director Garry Marshall [GAMAR]. Hi last effort New Year’s Eve debuted to $13 million in 2011. Julia Roberts [JROBE], Jennifer Aniston [JANIS] and Kate Hudson [KHUDS] are the star attractions, since the PG-13 rated film has earned terrible reviews. Arriving in 3031 theaters, Mother’s Day could bring $11 million.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War [SWHT2] opened as poorly as expected of a prequel no one asked for. Snow White and the Huntsman tumbled 59% in its second weekend. A similar plunge would put The Huntsman at about $8 million.
Though Ratchet & Clank [RATCL] is based on a best-selling series of Sony PlayStation videogames, the animated adaptation is being released by Gramercy Pictures, which should indicate its box office prospects. Those who grew up playing the games are now too cool and old for the PG-rated film. Ratchet & Clank could score $7 million from 2891 locations.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
