Two new wide releases will brave the sophomore weekend of the fifth best opener of all times, Captain America: Civil War [CAPA3]. Even with strong word of mouth, the superheroes slugfest will likely still decline by more than 50%. Two years ago, Captain America: Winter Soldier fell 57% in its second outing, while last year's The Avengers: Age of Ultron tumbled 59%. A similar drop-off would put Captain America: Civil War at around $77 million.
George Clooney [GCLOO] and Julia Roberts [JROBE] reunite to star in Money Monster [MONYM] directed by Jodie Foster [JFOST]. The R-rated thriller pits a hard-working average Joe against the greedy bankers of Wall Street. Sony premiered the film to favorable reviews at Cannes, which should help attract its target audience of older adults. Tipped in 3105 theaters, Money Monster may rake in $10 million.
The PG-13 rated horror The Darkness [6MRDR] hopes to cash in on Friday the 13th. Kevin Bacon [KBACO] and Radha Mitchell [RMITC] play parents to a boy who brought home an evil supernatural entity. The marketing campaign has been minimal as Blumhouse opted to release the film through High Top Releasing rather than Gramercy Pictures. The Darkness may uncover $4 million from 1755 locations.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
