The Fourth of July frame porved more competitive than expected, however, Finding Dory [NEMO2] maintained the top spot with an estimated $50.2 million over the 4-day weekend. The Pixar sequel has earned $380.5 million.
The Legend of Tarzan [TARZN] debuted in second place with $45.6 million. The action adventure evidently appealed to women more than men as the audience was slightly more female at 51%.
The Purge: Election Year [PURG3] closed with $34.8 million to open third overall. The dystopian thriller showed no sign of franchise fatigue from the previous installment.
The BFG [TBFG] underperformed with $22.3 million at the fourth spot. The family film brought out an audience that was 54% female and evenly split between those under and over the age of 25.
Independence Day: Resurgence [IDAY2] finished fifth with $20.2 million over the long weekend to bring its total to $76.4 million.
Among specialty releases, Swiss Army Man [SWSAM] took in $1.7 million in its moderate expansion, while Our Kind of Traitor [OKOTR] opened with $1.2 million.
