Despite a nine-year hiatus, Matt Damon was welcomed back as Jason Bourne [BORN5] with an estimated $60.0 million opening weekend, second best in the franchise behind The Bourne Ultimatum's $69 million. The action sequel attracted an audience that was 55% males and 60% over the age of 35.
Last weekend's champ, Star Trek Beyond dropped 59% in its second weekend to $24.0 million and $105.7 million overall.
Bad Moms [BMOMS] debuted in third place with $23.4 million. The R-rated comedy proved front-loaded after a robust start Thursday night. As expected, women made up 80% of the audience.
The Secret Life of Pets [PETS] finished fourth with $18.2 million to bring its totatl across $296.2 million.
Lights Out [LITSO] took the fifth spot with $10.8 million, off 50% from its opening weekend.
Charting at eighth, Nerve [NERVE] earned $9.0 million and $15.1 million since opening on Wednesday. The thriller appealed to an audience that was 63% females and 78% under the age of 25.
Expanding to 565 theaters, Cafe Society [CFSCT] grossed $2.3 million.
