The rights to the Terminator franchise has been won by Investment Fund Pacificor for $29.5 million, beating out a rival joint bid by Sony and Lionsgate. Halycon, the producers of Terminator: Salvation, had declared bankruptcy in a dispute with its financier Pacificor. Sony and Lionsgate are now in talks with Pacificor on producing the next Terminator movie [TERM5]. According to Deadline Hollywood, Lionsgate would like to reboot the series and start over from the original film, which was directed by James Cameron. Lionsgate currently distributes Terminator 2 on DVD/Bluray, while Sony handled international distribution on Terminator: Salvation.
David Goyer [DGOYE] is stepping down as the showrunner for the ABC series "FlashForward" to concentrate on feature films, one of which tasks is returning to co-write the third Batman movie [BATM3] with director Christopher Nolan [CNOLA] and Jonathan Nolan. They have come up with the story idea for the sequel follow-up to seminal caped crusader caper The Dark Knight. Expect a new round of Bat-casting rumors to hit the interwebs real soon.
That's not all for Christopher Nolan. According to Deadline Hollywood, the savior of the Batman franchise has been tapped by Warner Bros. to bring his midas touch to the fallen superhero franchise Superman. Nolan will help shepherd the latest Man of Steel project in a "godfather" role, but is not expected to take the director's chair. The next Superman movie [SUPR2] is likely to be another restart, rather than a sequel to the lackluster Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh [BROUT]. Complicating matters however, the heirs to the creators of Superman now owns most elements to the origins of Clark Kent as Kal El from the planet Krypton. Warner Bros. must also start production on a Superman movie by 2011 before all Superman rights revert back to the heirs of the creators.
Finally, Tom Cruise [TCRUI] has closed the deal to return in Mission: Impossible IV [MISS4], the fourth film in the Paramount action franchise. The sequel hopes to start production this summer for release next Memorial Day weekend.
