This Oscar weekend didn’t keep audiences away from theaters. As the red carpet rolls out to greet the brightest and the best of the year, the box office continues to turn over its weekend winners. It was all fantasy and imagination for moviegoers who gave much love to Alice in Wonderland [ALCNW].
The Tim Burton [TBURT] directed extravanganza brought back a whopping $116.3 million, breaking the best ever record for the month of March. It also got the honor of being the sixth best opening of all time. Alice was also Burton’s best opening ever and the best 3D opener ever, beating out Avatar's $77 million. Not bad for a film that some said was just another Burton film.
Coming in second was the gritty crime-drama Brooklyn’s Finest [BRKLN]. The Antoine Fuqua [AFUQU] directed thriller took $13.5 million. Fuqua reteamed with his Training Day actor Ethan Hawke [EHAWK] for the film which will go down as another one of the director’s slick features.
Shutter Island [SHISL] continues to populate the top five this week at number three. The psychological thriller added another $13.3 million making its total take at $95.8 million.
Cop Out [2COPS] took number four with $9.1 million in its second weekend. Avatar continues its march with $7.7 million added to the total domestic gross of $720.2 million.
