After last weekend's post-Thanksgiving hangover, business is about to pick up again with the comedy Office Christmas Party [OFCPT] starring Jennifer Aniston [JANIS], Jason Bateman [JBATE] and an ensemble of familiar faces. Paramount’s marketing has effectively conveyed a wild and crazy time with the promise of R-rated bits and fun. Raging in 3120 theaters, Office Christmas Party could break $23 million.
Should Office Christmas Party falter, Moana [MOANA] could remain the box office champ for a third weekend. A 35% drop in its third weekend would be $18.5 million.
EuropaCorp expands Miss Sloane [SLOAN] wide into 1598 theaters after two weeks in a handful of theaters. Reviews are mixed on the award contender and Jessica Chastain [JCHAS] has yet to land any recognition. Miss Sloane may net $2.5 million.
Focus Features also expands Nocturnal Animals [NOCAN] wide into 1262 theaters after 3 weeks of limited release. The thriller faces competition from star Amy Adams’ [AMADA] other film Arrival, which has better word of mouth. Nocturnal Animals could capture $2 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
