This weekend, the winter’s biggest hit ever Alice in Wonderland [ALCNW], will face competition from four new movies including She’s Out of My League [SHOML], which hopes to be the feel good release of the weekend.
The star of She’s Out of My League, Jay Baruchel [JBARU] started out his career with bit parts before making a big debut in Million Dollar Baby. It wasn't until Judd Apatow's [JAPAT] 2007 comedy Knocked Up that made him popular. He followed up by also playing the hapless young actor-turned fighter in 2008’s Tropic Thunder. While always pulling his weight as a side character, he tries his hand at playing the lead for the first time this weekend in She’s Out of My League.
Baruchel has done well in roles where he inhabits the self-conscious awkward type who gets in situations that are over his head. Goofy and waif-like, Kirk is another hapless young man who inexplicably begins to date a knockout named Molly. Surprised and suspicious of his luck, Kirk must overcome his own self-esteem issues while everyone in his life try to undermine his ability to maintain a relationship with her.
While the story is not complicated, the film gives the usual 20-something romantic comedy a humorous and likeable twist by featuring a likeable character who is easy to root for. Baruchel gets a chance to take his character into new territory as he challenges all those who ridicule him. The rest of the cast includes other like Mike Vogel [MVOGE] as his friend, Alice Eve [AEVE] as Molly and Krysten Ritter, who has appeared in Confessions of a Shopaholic, as her best friend.
The R-rated League doesn’t shy away from delivering some raunchy humor to keep it from getting too sweet. When the romance gets tough, its characters doesn’t get too bitter and hateful. For those looking for an all around easy time with some good chuckles, She’s Out of My League should be a film that has a little something for both genders
