Surprising even the most optimistic predictions, the thriller Split [SPLIT] top the weekend box office with an estimated $40.2 million, the fifth highest opening for the month of January. The film attracted relatively even audience that was 52% female and 52% under the age of 25.
XXX: The Return of Xander Cage [XXX3] debuted a distant second with $20.0 million. The action sequel drew a crowd that was 53% male and 62% over the age of 25.
After two weeks at the top, Hidden Figures [HIDNF] dropped to third at $16.3 million. The drama has advanced $84.2 million.
Monster Trucks [MNTRC] slipped just 36% from its opening to $7.0 million and seventh overall. The family film has stashed $22.6 million.
The Founder [FONDR] opened at the ninth spot with $3.8 million from 1115 theaters.
Expanding to 650 theaters, 20th Century Women [20CWM] finished outside the top 12 with $1.4 million.
The Resurrection of Gavin Stone [TROGS] debuted with $1.3 million.
