Blumhouse and Universal have their second breakout hit of 2017 with the R-rated psychological thriller Get Out [GETOU] from writer-director Jordan Peele [JPEEL]. Daniel Kaluuya [DKALU] stars as a man visiting his girlfriend’s family for the first time and encounters racial tension that may be far more sinister. Get Out currently has a perfect RottenTomatoes score of 100% from critics. Much like Split, positive buzz has been spreading from those who have already seen the film in early screenings. Advance ticket sales are pacing ahead of Blumhouse's The Visit, which opened at $25.4 million. Showing in 2781 theaters, Get Out may escape with $25 million.
The LEGO Batman Movie [LBATM] should collect around $20.0 million for its third outing, while Fifty Shades Darker [50SH2] may tie up another $10 million.
Since last weekend was a holiday weekend, The Great Wall [GRTWL] could find itself crumbling more than 50% in its second frame to $ 9.5 million.
Fist Fight [FISTF] didn’t connect with comedy fans and may drop to $6 million for its sophomore session.
Rock Dog [ROCDG] targets families with young children that enjoyed Sing. Lionsgate’s last animated release The Wild Life managed just $3.3 million. The PG-rated Rock Dog may perform slightly better at $5 million from 2077 theaters.
Open Road finally releases Collide [ABAHN], which has been delayed for nearly two years by Relativity's bankruptcy. While Nicholas Hoult [NHOUL] and Felicity Jones [FJONE] have become bigger stars, the PG-13 rated actioner looks entirely generic and formulaic. Racing into 2045 theaters, Collide could drive off with $3.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
