With the two new wide offering from Hollywood tracking poorly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 [GOTG2] should easier repeat at the top of the weekend box office. Like previous Marvel sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is expected to drop more than 55% to around $63 million.
Amy Schumer [ASCHU] burst onto the scene two summer ago with Trainwreck with a $30 million debutbefore legging out $110 million. The comedian returns with Snatched [MTDTR] co-starring Goldie Hawn in her first film role in 15 years. Unfortunately, Snatched doesn’t look as funny as Trainwreck and lacks that film’s buzz. Targeted at women, the R-rated comedy could get a slight boost on Mother’s Day Sunday. Opening in 3501 theaters, Snatched may seize $20 million.
Warner Bros. dusts off another classic property with King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword [KARTH] directed by Guy Ritchie [GRITC], who previously revived Sherlock Holmes. However, Charlie Hunnam [CHUNN] lacks the starpower of Robert Downey Jr.. Several release date changes indicate a troubled film, which is borne out by the negative reviews. The press is already proclaiming the $150 million fantasy production a massive bomb. King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword will fulfill that prophecy with about $19 million from 3702 theaters.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson [ATAYL] and John Cena [JCENA] star in the R-rated war film The Wall [TWALL] produced by Amazon Studios. Targeting at older men, The Wall could hit $2 million from 541 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
