The superhero who smashed the $100 million opening weekend barrier in 2002 is back with a second franchise reboot. Although the previous installment The Amazing Spider-Man 2 debuted to $91.6 million in May 2014, the second film starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker ended its run with just $202.9 million. Sony decided to team up with Marvel Studio to start over once again. Tom Holland [TOHOL] took over the role and Spider-Man made his first appearance in Disney’s Captain America: Civil War last year. Spider-Man: Homecoming [SPID6] finds Peter Parker back in high school, but eager for more action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr. [RDOWN] and Iron Man join the PG-13 rated film to lend their starpower to the franchise, while Michael Keaton [MKEAT] plays the Vulture, a classic villain who appears in the franchise for the first time. Homecoming has earned rave reviews and generated excellent buzz, which should bring back Spidey fans disappointed by the last outing. Advance ticket sales are pacing ahead of Wonder Woman. Swinging into 4348 theaters, Spider-Man: Homecoming could capture $116 million.
Despicable Me 3 [DESME3] was not immune to franchise fatigue. Two years ago, Minions dropped 57% in its second weekend. A similar decline would bring Despicable Me 3 down to $31 million.
With strong word of mouth, Baby Driver [BDRIV] looks to hold better than 60% in its second weekend for $13 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
