With the major studios continuing their vacation at the box office, three small films fill the void by targeting specific audiences. Unfortunately, most eyes will be on the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match this weekend. The Hitman’s Bodyguard [HTMBG] should easily retain the top spot due to the lack of competition. The Hitman’s Bodyguard could drop 50% in its second weekend and still finish ahead of everyone else at $10.0 million.
After jumping around the release calendar a few times, Leap! [LEAP] finally secures 2575 theaters. However, cash-strapped The Weinstein Co can’t really afford to mass market the PG-rated animated film. Leap! could land just $5.0 million.
Logan Lucky [LUCLO] underperformed due to a lack of marketing. With good reviews, the heist film could hold slightly better than 50% for a second weekend at $4.0 million.
All Saints [ALSNT] comes from Sony’s faith-based label AFFIRM. Christian churchgoers are a hard demographic to track. Opening in 846 theaters, All Saints may tally around $3.5 million.
BH Tilt targets Kung Fu movie fans with Birth of the Dragon [BOTDR]. The PG-13 rated actioner about Bruce Lee could punch out $3 million from 1617 theaters.
A24’s Good Times [GDTIM] expands wide to 721 theaters after 2 weeks of limited release. With excellent reviews, the Robert Pattinson [RPATT] starrer may bank $2 million.
Neon’s Ingrid Goes West [INGGW] also expands after 2 weeks of limited release to 647 theaters. The Aubrey Plaza [APLAZ] drama could post $1.8 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
