With Star Wars looming over the multiplex like the Death Star, the major studios have passed on this weekend leaving an opening for minor distributors. However, neither of the two new wide releases will be able to topple Coco [DDLM]. Pixar’s animated hit will easily rule the charts for a third weekend with around $16.5 million.
Justice League [JLEAG] opened at over $65 million more than Wonder [WONDE], but both are likely to earn about $8 million during their fourth weekend in a battle for second place.
After average $64K in 19 theaters, The Disaster Artist [DSART] expands wide to 840 theaters. James Franco [JAFRA] directed and starred as Tommy Wiseau, the eccentric filmmaker behind the cult hit The Room. A24 has steadily build up buzz virally and organically since its March premiere at SXSW. The Disaster Artist could say hi to $6 million.
Broad Green targets senior moviegoers with Just Getting Started [VCAPR] starring Morgan Freeman [MFREE] and Tommy Lee Jones [TLJON]. The PG-13 rated comedy is a last hoorah for the distributor, which is getting out of the production game. Just Getting Started could retire with $5 million from 2146 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
