The top nine took the stage last night to sing the songs of Elvis Presley mentored by 2009 winner Adam Lambert. Last week, the judges used the sole ‘Judges Save’ to keep Michael Lynche [AI9MLY] from being eliminated. This means that tonight, two contestants will be sent home. So did the blues tinged performances from last night render, more of the good stuff?
Most of last night’s performances did not deviate from the previous weeks. Contestants operated in the same comfort zone with none offering anything too different. According to judges, Crystal Bowersox [AI9CBO] was best of the night once again with her rendition of ‘Saved.” Bowersox elicited much love from Simon Cowell who appreciated her originality once again. Bowersox continues to be the contestant to beat.
Lee Dwayze [AI9LDE] is close behind Bowersox as he delivered an edgy version of ‘A Little Less Conversation.’ Dwayze has managed to get comfortable with himself to such a degree that his personality is shining through more and more with each performance. Dwayze definitely wants to give Bowersox a run for her money.
Lynche who was saved last week let his sensitive side come through with ‘In the Ghetto.’ Lynch toned down the theatrics which had him in trouble last week and just sang. He must make sure that his performances remain strong for audiences to warrant keeping him in.
Siobhan Magnus [AI9SMA] who started out the competition on par with Bowersox has lost some steam and can’t seem to regain it. She delivered another lackluster performance singing ‘Suspicious Minds.’ Hopefully Magnus can remind audiences and judges why they chose her in the first place by bringing her talent out of hiding.
Tim Urban [AI9TUR] continues to win fluttering hearts with his dashing looks and a performance of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love.’ Although not the showstopper that his fellow contestants are, Urban however, is likely to stick around thanks to adoring tweens. Aaron Kelly [AI9AKE] is making a valiant effort to show variety but is unable to keep up with complicated numbers. It is uncertain whether he will be penalized or rewarded for stepping out of his comfort zone for ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’ Andrew Garcia [AI9AGA] delivered mediocrity with ‘Hound Dog.’
Katie Stevens [AI9KST] won over the judges with a fun filled version of ‘Baby, What You Want Me to Do.’ Although it wasn’t spectacular vocally, Stevens showed the confidence and self-assuredness that had eluded her lately.
Acknowledged for good vocals, Casey James [AI9CJA] kept it competent with ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy.’ James is vocally on par with Bowersox and Dwayze and has everything it takes to win the competition. He needs to bring his performances up to the level of his talent and James has a real shot.
Traders definitely think the men have scored lower as Urban, Kelly and Garcia are in the bottom three on the American Idol Warrants. Check in and see what two poor souls will head home this evening.
