Chris Hemsworth [CHEMS] toplines 12 Strong: The Declassified True Story Of The Horse Soldiers [HORSO]. Warern Bros.' R-rated film focuses on the first American Special Forces squad in Afghanistan after 9-11. Although war films American Sniper and Lone Survivors have outperformed in January, 13 Hours managed just $16.2 million two years ago. Starpower should continue to draw older adults to the political drama The Post [TPOST], which looks to uncover another $12 million in its second weekend of wide release.
Gerard Butler [GBUTL] leads the heist actioner Den of Thieves [DENOT]. STX is marketing the R-rated film as similar to the 1995 film Heat, albeit with less starpower. Butler’s last film, the PG-13 rated Geostorm debuted with $13.7 million. Den of Thieves may take in just $9 million from 2432 locations.
A trio of limited releases are expanding wide ahead of the Oscar nomination announcement next week. Focus ups Phantom Thread [PHTHD] from 62 to 897 theaters. Billed as the last acting performance by Daniel Day-Lewis [DDAYL], Phantom Thread could sew up $4 million. Sony Pictures Classics takes Call Me By Your Name [CMBYN] to over 850 theaters in its ninth week of release. The gay romance could nab $3 million. Neon pushes I, Tony [TONYA] from 517 to 796 theaters. The Tonya Harding biopic could land $2.5 million.
