With the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, Winchester [WNCHS] is the only new wide release from Hollywood this weekend. The PG-13 rated horror film stars Helen Mirren [HMIRR] as the real-life heiress who built the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. It’s been a month since the last horror film Insidious: The Last Key surprised with $29.6 million. CBS Films hopes Winchester also connects with female horror fans. However, Winchester is showing in just 2480 theaters and may settle with $12 million, which could be enough for first place.
Like any other YA dystopian sci-fi sequel, Maze Runner: The Death Cure [MAZE3] is surely frontloaded. The previous installment Maze Runner: The Scorched Trials dropped 53% in its second weekend. A similar decline would put Maze Runner: The Death Cure at about $11.5 million.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle [JUMNJ.BW] looks to score around $11 million in its 7th weekend. That has a chance to top the rankings if Winchester and Maze Runner both falter.
After a better than expected wide expansion, Hostiles [HSTIL] should be able to hold 60% from last weekend and tally another $6 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
