Shania Twain brought out the best of the American Idol contestants on Tuesday evening. The country chanteuse served as mentor for the hopefuls who shined performing her songs. Some of the singers delivered their best performances ever finally making this a truly nail-biting competition.
The most exciting part of the evening for this writer was the comeback of Siobhan Magnus [AI9SMA]. Now it’s not an “official comeback” as Magnus never stopped performing. Her talent and mainly her confidence had gone missing but she finally let it shine last night. Showcasing her tattoo and the spunk that set her apart in the beginning, Magnus delivered a top notch performance of ‘Any Man of Mine.’
Another contestant who showed confidence last night was Aaron Kelly [AI9AKE]. Kelly was another singer getting lost in a boring persona but it seemed Twain’s ‘You’ve Got a Way’ was his saving grace. Kelly was very comfortable with the song and was able to deliver some moving vocals. Since the pool is smaller, Kelly might be in danger this week but he can walk away knowing that he went out with a competent performance.
Casey James [AI9CJA] employed simple vocals for his version of ‘Don’t.’ James clearly delivered his best performance ever and showed how at home he was with the country music sound. He got the love of the judges and has a pretty good chance of sticking around to bring some more goodness.
Lee Dwayze [AI9LDA] covered one of Twain’s most well-known and difficult songs ‘You’re Still the One.’ Although he struggled with certain parts, Dwayze chose a great song for his style and won all the judges over. He is certain to stay in for another week.
Finally, Crystal Bowersox [AI9CBO] and Michael Lynche [AI9MLY] managed to turn in solid performances, if a little boring. Bowersox sang ‘No One Needs to Know’ but lacked some gusto. Bowersox seemed to be hanging back on purpose and possibly getting a little lazy. Unofficially considered the best performer on the show, Bowersox needs to realize everyone else wants to knock her out. One of those is Lynche, whose sensitivity and moving ballads are beginning to irritate this writer. Although he is good at delivering the motions, Lynche sometimes lacks real emotion. Nonetheless he did solid work with ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing.’
As the numbers dwindle, the competition gets fierce. Log on to the 2010 American Idol Warrants and predict who will stay and who will go.
