10 years after Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War [AVNG3] becomes the 19th entry as all the mightiest superheroes unite to take on Thanos. The PG-13 rated blockbuster brings together the Avengers last seen in Captain America: Civil War with characters from Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange. Some of them will not make it out of alive. The Avengers broke the opening weekend record in May, 2012 with $207.4 million. Jurassic World surpassed it June 2015 with $208.8 million, which lasted just six months until Star Wars: The Force Awakens set the current record at nearly $248.0 million. Although the last Avengers: Age of Ultron disappointed with a $191.3 million debut in 2015, the last MCU film Black Panther roared back with $202 million this past February. The Disney marketing machine has drove tracking above $225 million. However, advance ticket sales are trailing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opened at $220 million. Reviews are enthusiastic. While word of mouth should be excellent amongst fanboys, rumors of death could dampen the family audience. Opening as the second widest release ever at 4474 theaters, Avengers: Infinity War looks to claim around $240 million.
A Quiet Place [AQPLC] will drop back to second with $11 million, while Rampage [RAMPG] is likely to take third at $9 million.
The female-targeted comedy I Feel Pretty [IFPRT] should hold better than 50% for a second weekend around $8.5 million. On the other hand, the male-centric Super Troopers 2 [STRO2] is poised to drop more than 60% of its debut to about $6 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
