After setting a new opening weekend record, Avengers: Infinity War [AVNG3] will continue to put a stranglehold on the marketplace. The Marvel team-up won't surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens' second weekend record of $149.2 million, and may not even pass Black Panther’s $111.7 million at the second spot. The last 3 MCU films to open in May, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War both dropped more than 59% during their sophomore weekend, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 fell 55.5% last year. Despite strong word of mouth, Avengers: Infinity War's second weekend is still likely to drop around 57% to $110 million.
Anna Faris [AFARI] and Eugenio Derbez [EDERB] star in the gender-reverse remake of the 1987 comedy Overboard [OVERB]. Lionsgate targets Latino moviegoers who drove How to be a Latin Lover to $12.3 million a year ago. The PG-13 rated Overboard may pull in $13 million from 1623 theaters.
The R-rated dramedy Tully [TULLY] reunites Charlize Theron [CTHER] with director Jason Reitman [JREIT]. Their last collaboration 2011’s Young Adult took in $3.4 million during its first wide weekend. The Focus release has earned excellent reviews, which should connect with their adult target audience. Tully may deliver $5 million from 1353 locations.
New distributor Electric Entertainment opens Bad Samaritan [BSMRT] wide in 2007 theaters. The R-rated thriller is reminiscent of the 2016 hit Don’t Breathe. However, the marketing has generated little buzz. Bad Samaritan might take in $2.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
