Two new films targeted at women enter the box office battle on Mother’s Day weekend, but Avengers: Infinity War [AVNG3] will once again prevail. Avengers: Age of Ultron decayed 50% during its third weekend while Captain America: Civil War dropped 55%. Splitting the difference would put Avengers: Infinity War's third weekend at about $56 million.
Melissa McCarthy [MMCCA] reteams with her husband director Ben Falcone for the comedy Life of the Party [LFOPT]. Their last two efforts, the R-rated The Boss debuted at $23.6 million April of 2016, while the R-rated Tammy opened with $21.6 million July of 2014. The college-set Life of the Party is rated PG-13. Warner Bros. is hoping daughters bring their mothers this weekend. The film will appeal strictly to McCarthy’s fanbase as reviews are terrible as usual. Rushing 3656 theaters, Life of the Party may pledge $20 million.
Universal puts a twist on the home invasion genre with the PG-13 rated thriller Breaking In [BRKIN]. Unlike Taraji P. Henson who has established a track record with similar films, Gabrielle Union [GUINO] is toplining her first solo lead role for the first time. Reviews are trending negative, but that’s unlikely to matter to the urban, female demographic. Breaking In could find $15.5 million from 2537 locations.
With new competition for female moviegoers, the comedy Overboard [OVERB] is likely to fall 50% in its second to around $7.5 million. How to be a Latin Lover tumbled 58% last year against Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
