After waiting for more than 13 years, Walt Disney has finally produced the animated sequel Incredibles 2 [NCRD2]. Writer-director Brad Bird [BBIRD] returns to further the adventures of Pixar's superhero family. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel ever since The Incredibles opened in 2004 with $70.5 million and totaled $261.4 million, second only to Finding Nemo at the time. Marketing has delivered what moviegoers are anticipating for the PG-rated sequel. Advance ticket sales are outpacing Finding Dory, which holds the current opening weekend record of $135.1 million for an animated film. Arriving in 4410 theaters, Incredibles 2 should set a new high at around $150 million.
The femme-led Ocean’s 8 [OCEN4] could hold 55% of its opening and score another $23 million.
Warner Bros. had a produced another R-rated comedy with the male-driven Tag [TAG]. While Game Night successfully opened to $17.1 million in February, The House debuted last July with just $8.7 million. Tag’s ridiculous premise is likely to divide potential moviegoers, though reviews are trending positive. Playing in 3382 theaters, Tag may grab $14 million.
Sony has remade the Blaxploitation classic Superfly [SPRFL] into a stylish, modern R-rated actioner for the hip-hop crowd. The release date was moved up just two weeks ago, so audiences may not be aware of the Wednesday opening that grossed $1.2 million. Landing in 2220 theaters, Superfly could taste $9 million over the weekend from 2220 theaters.
Hereditary [HERDT] was not what mainstream moviegoers expected and received a D+ CinemaScore. The horror film is likely to fall more than 55% in its sophomore weekend to $6.0 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
