Arriving 3 years later rather than after 14 years of built-up anticipation, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom [JURA5] is unlikely to match Jurassic World's $208.8 million opening, which was the second best ever at the time. Chris Pratt [CPRAT] and Bryce Dallas Howard [BDHOW] return to lead the PG-13 sequel, which lifts the CG dinosaurs off the island and put them onto the mainland. Universal has pull out all the stops in its marketing campaign, while opening Fallen Kingdom overseas first in advance of the World Cup. Reviews are decent, but the buzz is not a must-see. Advance ticket sales have not been touted, meaning they’re not pacing any recent blockbusters. Many moviegoers who came out for Jurassic World are choosing to wait on Fallen Kingdom, or perhaps see Incredibles 2 instead. Roaring into 4475 theaters, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom may stomp $141 million.
The animated Incredibles 2 [NCRD2] played like a four-quadrant live-action blockbuster and scored the eighth biggest opening of all times. The Pixar sequel will likely fall like other live-action blockbusters, especially with direct competition from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Incredibles 2 could decline more than 50% to around $90 million.
Ocean’s 8 [OCEN4] looks to score another $10 million during its third outing.
The R-rated comedy Tag [TAG] is likely to lose 50% in its second weekend to about $7.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
