Last night, American Idol contestants tackled one of the most challenging themes so far: the songs of Frank Sinatra. His daughters Tina and Nancy were in attendance to watch the contestant sing their father’s songs. Harry Connick Jr. not only mentored the singers, but also helped arrange their version of Sinatra’s numbers and performed alongside them with his band. It was a night of smoothness and swagger for some and hopeless failure for others.
With five contestants left, it is imperative that each bring out their best. For Aaron Kelly [AI9AKE], enthusiasm was the key to win the judges over. Although the material was too advanced for him, the 17-year-old had fun with ‘Fly Me to the Moon.’ He will probably be in the bottom of the five, but his likeability and the fact that he didn’t shy away from a tough song could keep him around for another week.
One of the worst performances this season was given by Casey James [AI9CJA], who apparently nailed ‘Blue Skies’ in rehearsal but fell flat on the show. In fact, this could be it for James as he seemed uncomfortable and incapable of singing the song. The performance elicited much meanness from Simon Cowell who forecast that James might be at his end.
The only female left, Crystal Bowersox [AI9CBO] channeled a sultry lounge singer style on Sinatra night. Her low key performance of ‘Summer Wind’ was panned as boring by the judges, but Bowersox defended her interpretation of the song. Nonetheless, at this point in the competition each contestant must showcase more than talent and Bowersox played it too safe. Although she has been one of the frontrunners, she can’t have any more low key performances if she wants to win.
Michael Lynche [AI9MLY] delivered one of his best performances ever with an infectious version of ‘Just the Way You Look Tonight.’ He effortlessly nailed swagger and radiated charm. With a superior arrangement by Connick Jr. the band perfectly melded the music to Lynche’s vocals. He is definitely fighting to win this competition.
It may be hard to top Lynche, but Lee Dwayze [AI9LDE] might have delivered the best performance of the evening. Working with Connick Jr. gave the singer much needed confidence which helped him connect like never before. Dwayze’s version of ‘That’s Life’ won over every judge and it became clear that he is their favorite to win.
