A couple of new wide releases target urban markets this weekend, but Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom [JURA5] will easily prevail again. Jurassic World declined 49% in its second weekend. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be more frontloaded and drop closer to 59% to about $61 million.
After dropping 56% in its second session, Incredibles 2 [NCRD2] is likely to level out at better than 50% for a third outing around $42 million.
Lionsgate targets basketball fans with PG-13 rated comedy Uncle Drew [UDREW]. Lil Rel Howery [LRHOW] and NBA star Kyrie Irving pair up in the feature adaptation of a Pepsi viral series. The film also features a host of former all-star players who have been outfront everywhere on the promotion circuit. Fandango reports robust advance ticket sales outpacing Barbershop: The Next Cut and Boo! 2, both $20 million openers. Uncle Drew could score at least $17 million from 2740 locations.
James Brolin [JBROL] and Benicio Del Toro [BDELT] reprise their roles as allies in the war on the Mexican drug cartels turned adversaries in the R-rated sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado [SICA2]. 2015's critically acclaimed Sicario was nominated for 3 Oscars. But since Emily Blunt literally walked away at the end, Sony is marketing the sequel as more of a straight up action film targeted at men and Hispanic moviegoers. Lionsgate released the first Sicario, which opened in limited release before banking $12.1 million in its third weekend wide expansion. Fandango reports advance ticket sales are outpacing The Commuter and American Assassin from earlier this year. Opening in 3055 theaters, Sicario: Day of the Soldado may hit $16 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
