The summer box office continues to heat up as two more would-be blockbusters open for business. Adam Sandler [ASAND] and his buddies return to voice Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation [HTRN3]. Sony Animation’s PG-rated sequel takes the friendly monsters on a cruise. The first Hotel Transylvania and its sequel both opened during September to $42.5 million and $48.5 million, respectively. July is a more competitive month, especially with Incredibles 2 still holding strong. There are no reports of advance ticket sales outpacing the previous installments. Booked in 4206 theaters, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation may soak up $43 million.
Dwayne Johnson [TROCK] toplines Skyscraper [SKYSC], his second original film in 3 months. Universal’s PG-13 rated actioner is an unabashed formulaic remix of Die Hard and The Towering Inferno. Johnson opened Rampage to $35.8 million this past April. Skyscraper’s advance ticket sales are outpacing Rampage, though that’s not a 100% correlator as seen last week with Antman and the Wasp. Showing in 3782 locations, Skyscraper could reach $34 million.
The first weekend of Ant-Man and the Wasp [ANTM2] turned out to be most frontloaded of all the Marvel films. Ant-Man shrunk 57% in its sophomore session. Ant-Man and the Wasp is likely to downsize around 60% to $30 million.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom [JURA5] looks to admit another $15 million to finish its fourth weekend close to $365 million.
The First Purge [PURG4] is headed for a big drop as the two previous Purge sequels tumbled more than 60% during their second weekend. Opening on a Wednesday may lessen the fall to around 56%, which would put The First Purge at about $7.5 million.
After scoring the best theater average in its limited opening, Sorry to Bother You [STBYU] expands wide to 805 theaters. The R-rated black comedy has excellent reviews from critics and positive buzz among the hip urban crowd. Sorry to Bother You could dial up $5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
