The summer movie season kicked off with an estimated $133.6 million opening weekend from Iron Man 2 [IRNM2]. While it did not break any box office records as some had anticipated, the debut still ranks the fifth highest of all time and the best ever for Paramount. The superhero sequel topped the $98 million scored by the original in 2008. While reviews from critics were mixed, audiences gave Iron Man 2 a CinemaScore of A, which should bode well for its long term prospects.
Last weekend's champ, A Nightmare on Elm Street [NELMS] dropped a scary 72% to $9.17 million in its second outing. The horror remake has dreamt up $48.5 million.
How to Train Your Dragon fetched another $6.76 million to reach $201.1 million in its seventh weekend.
Sophmore pic Furry Vengeance [FURYV] declined 40% to finish sixth with $4 million.
