Yet another sequel is set to rule the weekend box office as Mission: Impossible – Fallout [MISS6] primes for late July fireworks. Tom Cruise [TCRUI] is back for his sixth Mission, which features for the first time, a returning director - Christopher McQuarrie [CMCQU], villain played by Sean Harris [SHARR], and femme fatale played by Rebecca Ferguson [RFERG]. Unlike previous installments, Fallout continues the story from the previous Rogue Nation, which opened to $55.5 million three years ago. Like previous chapters, the story remains secondary to the real-life stunts in the action scenes. The addition of Henry Cavill [HCAVI] and his infamous moustache have helped to add buzz. Fallout is the best reviewed of the sixth-film series. Cruise has worked tirelessly on Paramount’s promotional tour, and it’s about to pay off as advance ticket sales are pacing ahead of all previous Missions. Dropping into 4386 theaters, Mission: Impossible – Fallout could deliver $63 million.
Despite a lower opening, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again [MAMI2] should hold better than The Equalizer 2 [EQLZ2] and remain in the second spot. The first Mamma Mia! declined 36% in its second weekend. The sequel has gotten better reviews, which could smooth out any frontloading. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again may belt out another $21 million.
The Equalizer dropped 45% during its second weekend. With competition from Mission: Impossible, The Equalizer 2 is likely to slide more than 50% to about $18 million.
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies [TNTNG] is based on the cartoon series that was adapted from DC Comics. With its irreverent fourth-wall-breaking humor, the animated superhero film is Warner Bros.’s PG-rated answer to Deadpool, who is mentioned in several jokes. Targeting teen boys and their dads, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies could tally $17 million from 3188 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
