With school back in session, the multiplexes have seen a dearth of new movies targetd at families. Universal hopes they are ready to head out again for The House with a Clock on its Walls [THWCW]. Jack Black [JBLAC] and Cate Blanchett [CBLAN] star in the PG-rate fantasy based on a classic children’s book. The comparable Goosebumps opened to $23.6 million during October 2015. Showing in 3592 theaters, The House with a Clock on its Walls could ring up $23 million.
The female-centric A Simple Favor [ASFAV] should hold around 55% of its opening and score another $9 million.
On the flipside, the fanboyish The Predator [PRED4] will likely lose 65% of its debut and finish around $8.5 million.
Director Michael Moore returns with the anti-Trump documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 [FH119]. Fahrenheit 9/11 opened to a record $23.9 million for a documentary in 2004. However, Moore's last film Where to Invade Next grossed just $3.8M in total. Democrats are already fed up with Trump that they don’t need further convincing. Dialing up in 1719 theaters, Fahrenheit 11/9 may raise $8 million.
Oscar Isaac [OISAA] and Olivia Wilde [OWILD] star in the R-rated romance Life Itself [LIFIS] from the creator of the NBC series ‘This Is Us’. Amazon Studios courts older women, but the tearjerker has received poor reviews. Arriving in 2578 theaters, Life Itself may be worth $4.5 million.
The R-rated social satire Assassination Nation [ASNAT] is the first wide opener from Neon, so the young distributor has pushed the envelope with sensational, red band trailers. Assassination Nation could hit $3.5 million from 1403 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
