Last week Michael Lynche took his leave of the American Idol competition after two weeks of strong performances. His elimination goes to show that nothing is for certain when audiences vote. After Lynche’s departure, the playing field consisted of Crystal Bowersox [AI9CSO], Lee Dwayze [AI9LDE] and Casey James [AI9CJA].
Each contestant performed twice last night, one song of their choice and one song chosen by a judge. James has shown that he is a big hit with the girls. They have single handedly kept him in the running when he should have been eliminated long ago. Now James is up against the two favorites of the season Bowersox and Dwayze. He was in full rocker mode on Tuesday night singing his choice of ‘Ok, It’s Alright With Me’ and then ‘Daughters’ from John Mayer, chosen by Kara and Randy. Both performances were lethargic and boring. If James stays around, it is only because of the swooning girls who will call in for his looks and not for any real talent.
Crystal Bowersox displayed parts of her voice which have never been heard before. For the first round, Bowersox chose ‘Come to My Window’ from Melissa Etheridge. The song contained all the elements that Bowersox is good at. She delivered good vocals amidst a questionable arrangement. For round two, Ellen chose ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ by Paul McCartney for her to sing. Although completely out of her style range, Bowersox brought soulfulness and gusto to the performance we have not seen before. She is clearly capable of winning the big prize and should be in the final round if audiences vote based on talent.
Lee Dwayze has not been the same performer since Sinatra night. He now believes he can win and his performances brought out the sensitivity and depth that he lacked before. For round one, he chose ‘Simple Man’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dwayze gave one of his best performances connecting to the audience and displaying pure emotion. Simon’s choice of ‘Hallelujah’ further showcased Dwayze’s evolved artistic sense as he brought everyone to tears.
