The top three finishers from last week are likely to repeat as Hollywood avoids the party-filled, pre-Halloween weekend. Although Halloween [HALW3] hasn’t been holding as well as It or The Nun during its first week, business could pick up over the weekend before the namesake holiday. Halloween could lose 65% of its opening and still finish first at around $27 million.
A Star is Born [ASTAR] and Venom [VENM1] looks to hold the second and third spot with $11 million and $8 million respectively.
Gerard Butler [GBUTL] toplines the R-rated actioner Hunter Killer [HNTKL] as an American submarine captain out to stop a Russian coup that would lead to war. Butler’s last film Den of Thieves debuted at $15.2 million, but Hunter Killer lacks buzz and urban appeal. Surfacing in 2720 theaters, Hunter Killer could hit $7.5 million.
The coming-of-age story Mid90s [MID90] expands wide to 1206 theaters after one week of limited release. A24’s previous effort Eighth Grade earned $2.9 million in its wide expansion back in August. Mid90s should be able to roll in $2.5 million.
Pure Flix targets the faith-based crowd with the military-themed Indivisible [NDVSB]. The PG-13 rated drama could bring home $2 million from 830 theaters.
Rowan Atkinson returns in Johnny English Strikes Again [JENG3], but the PG-rated spy comedy opens in just 544 theaters. The previous installment, Johnny English Reborn debuted on 1552 theaters to $3.8 million. A similar per theater average would put Johnny English Strikes Again at about $1.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
