While leading the weekend box office with an estimated $62.2 million, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald [FBST2] underperformed expectations of matching the first film's $74.4 million opening. Franchise fatigue has already set in on the second of a five film series. The audience was 57% female with 69% aged 25 years or older.
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch [HTGSC] slipped 44% from last weekend's debut at the top spot to $38.2 million. The animated film has earned $126.5 million.
Bohemian Rhapsody [FREDI] finished third at $15.7 million, bringing its total to $127.9 million.
Instant Family [ISFAM] took in $14.7 million to debut in fourth place. The audience skewed 65% female and 61% over 35.
Widows [WIDOW] opend with $12.3 million to round out the top five. The turnout was 55% female and 55% under 35.
Overlord [OVRLD] tumbled 62% in its second to $3.9 million and eighth overall. The total stands at $27.7 million.
In its wide expansion to 865 theaters, A Private War [APWAR] netted just $750,000.
