After taking a week off, Hollywood is back with three new wide releases led by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [ASPDR]. Sony further expands their Marvel property with an animated PG-rated film that introduces multiple comic characters who’ve suited up as the web-slinging superhero including the popular Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore [SMOOR]. Produced by Philip Lord and Christopher Miller of The LEGO Movie fame, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has earned universal raves, which will encourage comic fanboys as well as parents with children to watch on the big screen. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse could capture $40 million from 3813 theaters.
The Mule [TMULE] stars Clint Eastwood [CEAST] in his first acting role in 6 years. He also directed the Warner Bros. film inspired by the true story of a senior who smuggled drugs for a Mexican cartel. The R-rated drama has earned favorable reviews, which should bring out Eastwood’s older fanbase. Packing 2588 theaters, The Mule could carry away $17 million.
Universal targets fans of producer Peter Jackson with the steampunk actioner Mortal Engine [MENGN]. Unfortunately, the PG-13 rated fantasy epic lacks starpower necessary to attract the mainstream audience. Rolling into 3103 theaters, Mortal Engines could generate $13 million.
Thanksgiving openers Ralph Breaks the Internet [RALP2] and Creed II [CREE2] look to finish their fourth weekend at around $10 million and $5 million, respectively.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
