Three new films jump into the box office pool along with a couple of wide expansions, but none is likely to knock off Aquaman [AQUMN] from its throne. Aquaman looks to bank another $17 million, which should be enough to win a fourth weekend.
Sony targets families with A Dog’s Way Home [DOGWH], from the same author as A Dog’s Purpose, which opened two years ago to $18.2 million. The PG-rated film isn’t tracking as high as its Universal predecessor. Scratching 3090 theaters, A Dog’s Way Home may uncover $13 million.
The Upside [NTCHB] finally hits theaters after STX rescued the PG-13 comedy from The Weinstein Co.. January has typically been good to Kevin Hart [KHART], but unfortunately he is currently embroiled in a controversy of his own. With reviews mixed, The Upside may reach $12 million from 3080 theaters
Escape Room [TMAZE] debuted above expectations, but should take the typical hard fall for a teen-targeted horror. A sophomore drop around 55% would bring in $8 million.
After earning $4 million in two weeks of limited release, On the Basis of Sex [OBSEX] expands wide to 1923 theaters. The timely Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic could resonate with women, especially in blue states. On the Basis of Sex may settle with $5 million.
Keanu Reeves [KREEV] toplines the PG-13 rated sci-fi thriller Replicas [RPLIC]. Entertainment Studios has delayed its release, put out confusing trailers, and embargo advance reviews. With little buzz, Replicas could produce about $4.5 million from 2327 theaters.
If Beale Street Could Talk [IBSCT] expands wide in its fifth weekend to 1018 theaters. Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to his Oscar-winning Moonlight has garnered rave reviews and award buzz. If Beale Street Could Talk may take in $3 million.
