Outperforming expectations to become STX's first number one film, The Upside [NTCHB] banked an estimated $19.6 million to lead the weekend box office. The comedy drew 59% female and 74% aged 25 or older.
Aquaman [AQUMN] was dethroned to second with $17.9 million, bringing its sum to $287.9 million after four weekends.
A Dog's Way Home [DOGWH] found $11.3 million to debut at the third spot. The family film appealed to a broad audience that was 52% female and 51% over 25.
Escape Room [TMAZE] finished fifth at $8.9 million, down 51% from its opening. The horror was locked up $32.4 million.
In its first weekend of wide expansion, On the Basis of Sex [OBSEX] jumped up to the eighth slot with $6.2 million.
Replicas [RPLIC] bombed in its twelfth place opening of just $2.5 million.
If Beale Street Could Talk [IBSCT] finished outside the top 12 with $2.4 million in its wide expansion to 1018 theaters.
