Only one new film opens wide this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend as Glass [GLASS] had scared off the competition. Samuel L. Jackson [SLJAC] reprises his villainous role from 2000’s Unbreakable. Buzz had been strong for the third film in filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s [MNSHY] superhero trilogy ever since 2017’s Split was revealed to be set in the same cinematic universe as Unbreakable. However, the PG-13 rated thriller has received mixed reviews, dampening enthusiasm among the more casual moviegoers. Split debuted to $40 million, which Glass should top in 3 days with the addition of Jackson as well as Bruce Willis [BWILL]. Showing 3841 theaters, Glass could crack $60 million over the 4-day holiday weekend.
After connecting with a broad audience, The Upside [NTCHB] should hold strong over the long weekend. The Upside could reach another $18 million by Monday.
The family-friendly A Dog’s Way Home [DOGWH] won’t tail off much in its second outing with about $9 million over the holiday weekend.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
