Hollywood studios look to re-expand their newly Oscar-nominated films this weekend, while offering only two new products. None will challenge the imcubent champ Glass [GLASS], even with its poor word of mouth. Glass is likely to tumble more than 55% in its second weekend to about $17 million.
Fox targets the family audience with the PG-rated fantasy The Kid Who Would Be King [KWWBK]. The modern take on the legend of the Excalibur could be too British for American taste. Despite opening in 3521 theaters, The Kid Who Would Be King may pull out $11 million.
Matthew McCounaughey [MMCCO] and Anne Hathaway [AHATH] star in the R-rated thriller Serenity [SRNTY]. There’s little buzz as Aviron had previously delayed the release, and marketing has been lacking. Serenity may bring in $6 million from 2651 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
