Super Bowl weekend brings two new releases to the marketplace. Hollywood was wise to avoid this weekend as the 70% of Americans will also be thawing out from the freezing Polar Vortex. Glass [GLASS] hopes to three-peat with about $9 million. However, The Upside [NTCHB] has been holding strong and could regain first place in its fourth weekend if it earns more than $8.5 million.
Sony counter-programs the football festivites with Miss Bala [MISSB] targeted at women and teenagers. The PG-13 rated thriller starring Gina Rodriguez [GIROD] should do best in the warmer Southwest. Playing in 2203 theaters, Miss Bala could attract $7.5 million.
The Kid Who Would Be King [KWWBK] failed to find much of an audience, but should hold 55% of its debut for a sophomore session around $4 million.
Warner Bros. finally gives They Shall Not Grow Old [TSNGO] a proper release after holding three special screenings through Fathom Events. The colorized World War I documentary appeals to only one demographic, but older men have turned out for the film to the tune of $8.3 million already. They Shall Not Grow Old may capture $2 million from 735 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
