Stars converge in Hollywood this weekend for the 91st Academy Awards. Moviegoers willing to brave the cold across the country could catch How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World [HTYD3]. Hiccup and Toothless return to complete a DreamWorks Animation trilogy. The PG-rated film has already opened in many countries, building buzz and earning excellent reviews. The original How to Train Your Dragon debuted at $43.7 million in 2010, which was topped by the sequel’s $49.5 million in 2014. However, five years may have been a little too long of a wait for The Hidden World. The winter month of February is also less lucrative than the previous releases during spring and summer. Swooping into 4259 theaters, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World may uncover $46 million.
The male-targeted sci-fi actioner Alita: Battle Angel [ALITA] is likely to decay more than 50% in its second weekend to $14 million.
With direct competition from How to Train Your Dragon in its third outing, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part [LEGO2] could settle around $11 million.
With its older women appeal, Isn’t It Romantic [ISROM] should hold better than 50% for a sophomore session at $8 million.
Fighting with My Family [FTWMF] expands wide after averaging nearly $35,000 in 4 theater last weekend. Dwayne Johnson [TROCK] lends his starpower to the life story of WWE wrestler Paige, played by Florence Pugh [FPUGH]. Fighting with My Family could pin $8 million from 2711 locations.
Roadside Attractions targets Christians with Run the Race [RTRAC] produced by Tim Tebow. Lined up in 854 theaters, Run the Race could cross $1.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
