While this year’s Oscar winners re-expand this weekend to boast their new golden statuettes, they will be no match for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World [HTYD3]. The animated trilogy finale should be able to hold 55% of its debut for a sophomore weekend around $31 million.
Tyler Perry [TPERR] cross-dresses as Madea for the last time in Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral [MADFF], ironically based on the first play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” to feature the character. The Lionsgate franchise had its opening weekend high in Madea Goes To Jail’s $40 million in 2009 and low with A Madea Christmas’s $16 million in 2013. The last installment Boo 2! A Madea Halloween debuted at $21.2 million in 2017. The urban fanbase for the PG-13 rated comedy is fairly established. A Madea Family Funeral should bring in $20 million from 2442 theaters.
Focus targets older females with the R-rated thriller Greta [TWIDW]. Chloe Grace Moretz [CMORE] plays a woman who befriends a widow with a dark, secret agenda. Reviews trend slightly positive. Playing in 2409 theaters, Greta could take $6 million.
Fighting with My Family [FTWMF] is likely to drop 50% in its second wide weekend to about $4 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
