The slow and stagnant start to 2019 at the box office is about to bounce back in a huge way with the arrival of Captain Marvel [CMARV], the first female superhero, stand-alone movie from Marvel Studios. Brie Larson [BLARS] stars as fighter pilot Carol Danvers who becomes possibly the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Co-starring Samuel L. Jackson [SLJAC] as young Nick Fury, the ‘90s set film will also appeal to older moviegoers’ nostalgia for the era. Disney has wisely slotted Captain Marvel as a vital prequel to see before her appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. Buzz has been building since the post-credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War last year. Advance ticket sales are third among MCU films behind just Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million opening weekend) and Black Panther ($202 million). Captain Marvel should near the $146.5 million debut of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from May 2017, but seems unlikely to reach the heights of the first two Avengers as well as Captain America: Civil War that teamed up multiple superheroes. Reviews are strong enough to entice casual moviegoers who may be on the fence. Launching in 4310 theaters, Captain Marvel may blast away $155 million.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World [HTYD3] could bring in about $16 million during its third session.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral [MADFF] looks to lose 55% of its opening for a second frame around $12 million.
The female-targeted Greta [TWIDW] should hold 55% of its debut for another $2.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
