After blasting off with a bang that silenced misogynistic trolls, Captain Marvel [CMARV] will easily top three new wide releases. Due to their frontloaded nature, Marvel films typical drop 55% during their sophomore session. A similar decay pattern would put Captain Marvel at $69 million.
The PG-rated animated Wonder Park [AMUSM] courts families with young children. Unfortunately, the story and quality of animation will not appeal to a wider audience. Paramount also has a poor track record in animated movies aside from SpongeBob SquarePants. Playing in 3838 theaters, Wonder Park may admit $11 million.
The PG-13 rated romance Five Feet Apart [5FTAP] stars Cole Sprouse [CSPRO] and Haley Lu Richardson [HLRIC] as two cystic fibrosis patients who fall in love. CBS Films hopes to attract many of Sprouse’s 24 million Instagram followers. Standing in 2803 theaters, Five Feet Apart could reach $10 million.
Pantelion targets Hispanic moviegoers with the R-rated comedy sequel No Manches Frida 2 [NMFR2]. The first film opened September 2016 with a strong $3.7 million in just 362 theaters. No Manches Frida 2 should be able to top $4 million from 472 locations.
The PG-13 rated sci-fi Captive State [CAPST] finally opens after having its release date tossed around by Focus. The studio’s lack of faith is demonstrated by little marketing support and no advance reviews. Showing in 2547 theaters, Captive State may net $3.5 million.
