The first official weekend of spring tips off with the R-rated horror Us [US], writer-director Jordan Peele’s [JPEEL] follow-up to 2017’s Oscar-winning Get Out. Lupita Nyong’o [LNYON] and Winston Duke [WDUKE] star as a couple stalked by their doppelgangers. The buzz of anticipation has only increased by excellent reviews. Get Out debuted with $33.4 million and legged out $176 million. Advance ticket sales for Us are outpacing A Quiet Place, which opened at $50 million, but not Halloween, which debuted at $76.2 million. Locked in 3741 theaters, Us looks to bank $62 million.
Captain Marvel [CMARV] will cross the $300 million milestone in its third weekend with another $37 million.
The family-friendly Wonder Park [AMUSM] should hold around 55% of its opening at around $9 million. A similar second weekend dip for the romance Five Feet Apart [5FTAP] would bring in $7.5 million.
After two weeks of limited release, Gloria Bell [GLORB] expands wide to 654 theaters. The Julianne Moore [JMOOR] starrer could earn at least $1 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
