Disney continues to mine its animated film library for live-action remakes with Dumbo [DUMBO]. The PG-rated family film lacks an A-list talent so seeing a baby elephant fly is the main draw. Director Tim Burton’s [TBURT] previous Disney adaptation Alice in Wonderland opened to a whopping $116 million in 2010 during the advent of 3D. Dumbo is unlikely to reach that high. Reviews are mixed, which may limit its ability to broaden to an older audience. Dropping into 4295 theaters, Dumbo could tally $62 million.
With Get Out fans checking out Us [US] on opening weekend, its second weekend will likely behave similar to other horror films. A 50% drop-off would net $35 million.
Captain Marvel [CMARV] aims to finish its fourth weekend with $16 million.
The R-rated comedy The Beach Bum [TBBUM] stars Matthew McConaughey [MMCCO] as a stoner, which shouldn’t be a stretch performance for his fans. Writer-director Harmony Korine’s previous film, Spring Breakers took in $4.9 million in its first weekend of wide release through A24. The Beach Bum is distributed by Neon, whose only wide opener was Assassination Nation with $1 million last September. The Beach Bum may locate $3 million from 1015 locations.
The anti-abortion drama Unplanned [UNPLN] targets Christian conservatives. It’s the first R-rated film from Pure Flix, whose last release Indivisible opened at $1.5 million. Opening in 1059 theaters, Unplanned looks to bank $2.5 million.
Bleecker Street expands Hotel Mumbai [HTLMB] wide to 924 theaters after one week of limited release. The R-rated thriller could book $1.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
